It was a typical day aboard the flight from New York to Los Angeles.
In the first row of economy class, an elderly Hasidic Jewish man was trying to fit the large box containing his hat into the overhead bin.
“Sir, you need to put that box under your seat or hold it in your hands. You people always make everything difficult.”

The sound of the waves crashing against the shore was a welcome escape for Marlon and Tanya, a successful Black couple from New York. They had rented a small hotel along the Florida coast. But as the first day passed, Marlon and Tanya noticed subtle, uncomfortable moments. A few of the white guests avoided them, and during breakfast, a middle-aged white couple moved to the table further away as soon as Marlon and Tanya sat down nearby.

Emma had rented this small wooden house for two weeks. It was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of Chicago, where she lived with her 4-month-old son, Samuel.
